Core Web Vitals That Actually Matter
Performance metrics that affect rankings.
Core Web Vitals are a real ranking factor, but a weak one. Understanding which metrics matter and how much they matter prevents over-investment.
The honest assessment
Core Web Vitals are a real ranking factor. Google has confirmed this. But they are a weak ranking factor compared to relevance, content quality, and authority. A slow site with great content will outrank a fast site with mediocre content almost every time.
That said, there are situations where Core Web Vitals matter enough to justify investment. Understanding when they matter and when they do not prevents both over-investment and neglect.
The three metrics
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP). Measures how long it takes for the largest visible element to load. Google's threshold: under 2.5 seconds is good, over 4 seconds is poor. This is the most impactful of the three because it directly affects perceived load speed.
Interaction to Next Paint (INP). Replaced First Input Delay in 2024. Measures responsiveness when users interact with the page (clicks, taps, key presses). Google's threshold: under 200 milliseconds is good, over 500 milliseconds is poor. Matters most for interactive pages like e-commerce and web applications.
Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS). Measures visual stability. How much does the page layout shift while loading? Google's threshold: under 0.1 is good, over 0.25 is poor. The most common cause is images without dimensions and ads that load late and push content down.
When Core Web Vitals matter
Competitive tiebreaker. When two pages are roughly equal in relevance, quality, and authority, page experience can be the deciding factor. In highly competitive SERPs where the top results are all strong, small advantages matter.
User experience impact. Regardless of SEO, slow and janky pages lose users. If your bounce rate is high and your pages are slow, fixing performance improves both user experience and search performance.
Mobile performance. Core Web Vitals are measured on real user devices. If your mobile experience is significantly worse than desktop, you are being evaluated on the worse experience. Google uses mobile-first indexing.
When they do not matter much
Low competition queries. If you are targeting queries with few strong competitors, Core Web Vitals will not be the difference between ranking and not ranking.
Content quality gap. If your content is significantly better or worse than competitors, performance metrics are irrelevant. Fix the content first.
Already passing. If your scores are in the "good" range, further optimization has diminishing returns for SEO. Going from 2.4 seconds LCP to 1.8 seconds will not meaningfully change your rankings.
How to check
PageSpeed Insights. Shows both lab data (simulated) and field data (real users). Field data is what Google uses for ranking. Lab data is useful for diagnosing specific issues.
Google Search Console. The Core Web Vitals report shows which URLs pass or fail, grouped by issue type. This is the most actionable view for prioritizing fixes.
Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX). The underlying dataset Google uses. Available through BigQuery for detailed analysis.
Common fixes
LCP improvements: Optimize images (proper sizing, modern formats like WebP/AVIF, lazy loading for below-fold images), reduce server response time, minimize render-blocking resources, preload critical assets.
INP improvements: Reduce JavaScript execution time, break up long tasks, use web workers for heavy computation, optimize event handlers.
CLS improvements: Set explicit width and height on images and videos, reserve space for ads and dynamic content, avoid inserting content above existing content after page load.
Takeaway
Check your Core Web Vitals in GSC. If you are failing on multiple URLs, fix the issues. If you are passing, move on to higher-impact work. Do not spend weeks optimizing from "good" to "great" unless you have already exhausted content and authority improvements.
